Nigeria’s worsening security crisis has once again taken centre stage as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the latest attacks rocking northern communities, warning that the country is heading down a dangerous path if urgent action isn’t taken.
Atiku, reacting to Monday’s deadly attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, described the incident as heartbreaking. Armed men stormed the school, killed the Vice-Principal, and abducted several female students another heavy blow to education in the North.
According to Atiku, the assault represents more than just an isolated tragedy; it highlights the growing vulnerability of schoolchildren, especially in rural communities where security presence is often weak.
A Wave of Violence Across the North
- The former Vice President also condemned:
- the killing of APC chieftain Umar Moriki,
- and the reported mass abductions in Tsafe LGA, Zamfara State, where dozens of residents including women and children were kidnapped.
Atiku described these repeated attacks as “inhumane and unacceptable,” saying they reflect a nation gradually losing control of its internal security.
He stressed that the tragedies unfolding in Kebbi and Zamfara mirror the ongoing violence in parts of Plateau, Benue, and other states, where communities have endured killings, displacement, and destruction for years.
He also referenced disturbing reports from Shanono LGA in Kano, where residents fled their homes following fresh threats from armed groups.
A National Emergency
Make we talk true Nigerians don dey tire. Every week, na new story of killings, kidnapping, and bandit wahala. People no fit sleep with two eyes closed again. Students no safe, farmers no safe, even people wey dey inside their house dey fear.
This kain matter no be wetin government suppose treat like normal news. E don pass emergency.
Atiku Calls for Urgent Security Overhaul
Atiku urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately review and reinforce the country’s security architecture, warning that the current strategy has clearly failed to protect citizens.
“Nigeria cannot continue like this,” Atiku said.
“Government must deploy adequate personnel to vulnerable communities and strengthen intelligence-led operations. Nigerians deserve dignity, safety, and peace.”
He added that the persistent loss of lives and widespread kidnappings reveal deep weaknesses in the country’s security framework and only decisive action can stop the bleeding.
